HOUSE OF LORDS HEAVY DEFEAT ON 42 DAYS DETENTION AND GOVERNMENT WITHDRAWAL IS GREAT VICTORY FOR FREEDOM

Published: 13/10/2008 21:00

The Ramadhan Foundation pays tribute to the House of Lords who defeated the UK Government’s proposal for 42 day detention for terror suspects as a great victory for freedom and justice.

This Government has tonight not only lost the vote but lost the argument – the British people can sleep easily tonight to know that freedom and justice has been protected from an authoritarian Government.

Having said this the terrorist threat is real and we must all come together as a nation to eliminate this, the Ramadhan Foundation once again states clearly that Islam forbids this evil of killing innocent people and will continue to support the work that is being done to protect the country.

We will continue the campaign to highlight the challenges for our country in getting rid of extremism and will not engage like some have in demonising whole communities.

Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:

“Tonight the House of Lords have done the country proud, for too long our hard fought freedoms and civil liberties have been taken away by an Authoritarian Government that seeks to reduce the rights of individuals.

I know tonight the Government not only lost the vote but also the argument.

The threat from terrorism is real and present and we must come together to deal with it.

I and the Ramadhan Foundation have for over twelve months campaigned heavily to bring to the attention of politicians and policy makers that the answer to identifying and eradicating terrorism and extremism is not locking up and isolating innocent people from minority communities but rather building confidences and having a open debate on the underlining reasons for terrorism.

We welcome the Government’s withdrawal of the 42 day proposal but we strongly oppose any attempt to reintroduce this – they have lost the argument for longer detention and good riddance to bad legislation”

END
