ANTI TERROR LAWS
DISCRIMINATE AGAINST MUSLIMS, RESPONSE TO LORD CARLISLE
REPORT

The Ramadhan Foundation
welcomes Lord Carlisle's report into the Anti Terrorism
legislation. We have for some years expressed these views to
Government and the public. On the stop and search powers Lord
Carlisle has rightly said the powers do not have the potential
to stop terrorist attacks and are been used to broadly.
In light of the Forest Gate
raids we call on the Government to order an independent review
into the effectiveness of the legislation and its implementation
by the Police. We cannot continue to have the heavy tactics
employed recently and expect the Muslim communities to have the
confidence in providing intelligence in relation to problems
that may develop.
The Police need to invest
resources into building lasting links with the Muslim
communities so that potential incidents can be prevented. You
will not be able to gather intelligence if the status quo
continues.
Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Ramadhan
Foundation Spokesman comments:
"We support the police in
protecting Britain from potential
terrorist attacks but this should never be at the expense of the
very basic freedoms we enjoy in this country, of respect and
presumption of innocence.
The Police cannot allow
another Forest Gate to happen; otherwise respect and confidence
in the Police will be very low. Reaching out to the youth and
the organisations must be the way forward, let us see the police
speak and engage with the correct sort of people on the ground
in the Muslim communities.
The Government must surely
order an independent review of the Anti terror legislation to
ensure that the legislation is not discriminating against
Muslims in the UK "
