Statement from the
Chairman of the Ramadhan Foundation on Tony
Blair's so-called meeting with self appointed Muslim Leaders
First published 20/7/2005 09:00
Following on from
yesterday's meeting between the Prime Minister, Michael Howard and Charles
Kennedy and the UK so called Muslim Leaders the Ramadan Foundation would like to
pay tribute to the Politicians for coming together for the first time, we
however are disappointed that Downing Street did not invite any of the youth
organisations like
ourselves.
We are a unique position
to be an organisation that is youth led and we are present at the grass root
level with the youth of today. By having self appointed Muslim leaders
pretending to represent and speak for the Muslims in the UK is wrong and no
organisation speaks for all the Muslims in the United Kingdom .
The chairman of the
Ramadhan Foundation Muhammad Umar comments on today's meeting
“It is sad that the
Government has not taken this opportunity to really engage with the Muslim youth
in the UK,
the leaders present today do not engage with young people.
If Politicians are serious
about tackling terrorism and extremism in our country then it needs to make the
effort to speak to new leaders that aspire to improve the lives of all citizen
regardless of their faith and culture, it is time for the new generation of
Muslims to take the stage.
In Manchester on August
7th Muslims will come together to talk about how the new generation of Muslims
in this country reclaim the agenda and our institutions from these so called
leaders, it is time to stand up and be counted
We urge the Government to
respond positively to our invitation to engage and arrange an urgent meeting”
[Ends]
