ANDERS
BREIVIK AND RIGHTWING EXTREMISM
Published:
Friday 24th August 2012 12:00
Mr. Mohammed
Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:
“The verdict this
morning in the Anders Breivik terrorism trial has been a long time
coming. He was responsible for killing 77 innocent victims and
injuring hundreds others and was only given twenty one years, he
should never be released. There are those who think that we should
believe in reform and forgiveness, you cannot forgive someone who
showed no remorse or compassion to the families of his victims.
My immediate
thoughts are with the victims and their families on this sad day and
also to the Norwegian people for their steadfast commitment to
multiculturalism, human rights and equality. This proud nation has
shown the way to defeat terrorism and extremism is to hold fast onto
your values and not be rushed into introducing emergency laws.
His evil
commitment to fascism and right-wing extremism is what should worry
Europe and the world, last week we saw a Czech man arrested who
wanted to copy Breivik, a Neo Nazi in Wisconsin who killed Sikhs and
here in the UK seventeen people with right wing sympathies have been
jailed for terrorist related activity. The threat from right wing
extremism is real, present and a danger to all decent, law abiding
citizens and we must not be complacent.
The Ramadhan
Foundation provided written advice to over 1500 Mosques last year in
light of the Oslo killings and we urge Mosques across Europe to
continue to be vigilant and report any attacks to the local Police.
All countries have a responsibility not to create an environment
where bigotry towards Muslims becomes the norm and where we can live
our lives in peaceful coexistence with our fellow citizens.
We can only
defeat this evil menace by uniting together in peace and for
freedom.”
