PUBLICATION
OF COUNTER TERRORISM BILL IS MOMENT OF HISTORY – STOP 42 DAYS
Published:
24/01/2008 06:30
As
the Government prepares to publish the Counter Terrorism Bill later
today, the Ramadhan Foundation is urging them to reconsider the
attempts to raise the detention time to 42 days. We have made it
clear in various requests to the Government that this proposal will
alienate the community and not serve any clear purpose.
The
Ramadhan Foundation will carefully study the Bill and respond to it in
due cause, we are however absolutely committed to opposing the 42 day
detention day element of the Bill.
We
welcome the Conservative Party, Liberal Democrats, other parties and
many backbench Labour MP’s who join the Director of Public
Prosecutions, former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith and many others in
opposing this measure. Sadly the Government have made no attempt
to provide any evidence of the need to increase the detention time and
it is clear that this measure is not in the public interest.
Mr.
Muhammad Umar, Chairman of the Foundation comments:
“The
publication of the Counter Terrorism Bill later today will be an
opportunity to once again offer our absolute opposition to 42 day
detention. This Government has not provided any evidence of the
need to increase the detention time and therefore it is clear it is far
more interested in headline grabbing initiatives, without any
substance.
The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes the commitment made by the Conservatives,
Liberal Democrats, Labour MP’s and many others in opposing this affront
to freedom and justice, the eroding of these rights will be a lasting
legacy of which future generations will not be proud.
I
am clear that together with all other concerned parties we will oppose
and defeat this erosion of justice.
The
Government must stop this obsession with longer detention.”
