CHANNEL
4 SHOULD SUSPEND ALL
DISPATCHES PROGRAMMES IN LIGHT OF CPS
DECISION

The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes today’s ruling from the Crown Prosecution
Service that Channel 4 distorted the views of the people interviewed in
the Dispatches Programme called “Undercover Mosque”. We totally
condemn Channel 4 for their arrogance in defending this programme when
it was clear that they had taken many contributions out of context and
edited and distorted speeches from those shown in the programme.
We
urge Channel 4 to suspend all the Dispatches programmes immediately so
that corrective action can be taken to ensure that this sort of
despicable journalism is eliminated from programme making.
The
Ramadhan Foundation has always been very clear that the Mosques have an
important role in promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence, but to
use these sensitive issues to demonise and terrorise Muslim
contributors is shocking and deeply disturbing. There can be no
justification for this gutter rending journalism and Channel 4 should
hang their head in shame.
Mr.
Shazad Anwar, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:
“The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes the CPS ruling as total
vindication for the Muslim organisations that complained that the
Undercover Mosque programme distorted the views of contributors.
Channel 4 should hang their head in shame and apologise immediately for
the hurt they have caused those people.
We
further urge the suspension of all Dispatches programmes to ensure that
corrective action is taken to ensure that this sort of thing never
happens again.
Channel
4 have given journalism a bad name and this adds to their failing over
the past few months. We will be urging Ofcom to also investigate
Channel 4’s behaviour.
This
sort of gutter rending journalism should never be defended and
tolerated.”
