FORCED MARRIAGES ARE AN AFFRONT TO ISLAM – GOVERNMENT COMMENDED

Published: 28/07/2008 20:00

The Ramadhan Foundation restates Islamic guidance on Forced Marriages, there is no justification or authority in Islam for this immoral and evil act, indeed Islam puts choice at the heart of its ruling on marriage.  The Foundation has been leading the campaign to highlight these issues within the diverse communities of the UK and is the only mainstream organisation from the Ethnic minority community willing to speak out so publicly.  However more work needs to be done to shame this practice and ensure that in the 21st century this practice can be totally eradicated.

We therefore welcome and commend the Government on its proposals on tackling these sham marriages, they have dealt with these issues in a respectful and thoughtful way and their action should be applauded.  The Ramadhan Foundation will respond shortly to the Government’s proposals in detail shortly via the consultation process but the Government is assured of our support in the attempts to eradicate this practice.

Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:

“I applaud the Government on its proposals; there can be no justification for these sham marriages, as we have made clear on many occasions Islam totally forbids this practice and indeed Islam puts choice at the heart of marriage.

The Community needs to root out this practice and you can be assured that we will continue our high profile opposition, that’s why shortly I will be appointing our new Director of Women Affairs who will lead on this important work

The Ramadhan Foundation attaches huge importance to this campaign, now is the time for the community to say no”

END
