GILLIAN
GIBBONS SHOULD BE RELEASED IMMEDIATELY

The
Ramadhan Foundation is dismayed by the conviction of Gillian Gibbons in
the teddy bear row in Sudan; we are disappointed that she has been
treated in such a way. This conviction does nothing to repair the
misconceptions about the Sudanese people and will strain relations
between the UK and Sudan.
We
welcome the positive and measured contribution of British Foreign
Secretary David Milliband MP in this crisis; we urge further diplomatic
pressure to ensure she is released without delay.
The
Ramadhan Foundation also calls on the President of Sudan Mr. Bashir to
intervene and pardon Gillian as she has made an honest mistake, at no
time has she set out to attack or demonise Islam. What should
have happened is an upskilling course in Sudanese culture and beliefs
for Gillian.
Mr.
Muhammad Umar, Chairman of the Foundation comments:
“The
Ramadhan Foundation is disappointed and horrified by the conviction of
Gillian Gibbons in Sudan. We urge the Sudanese President Mr.
Bashir to intervene and pardon Gillian; she has not set out to demonise
Islam.
We
welcome the calm, reasoned and measured response from David Milliband
MP and urge the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to continue this
diplomatic response to this crisis.
I
am disappointed some people are once again using this to attack Islam
and Muslims, the feedback and emails we have received tell us the
majority of the country supports the measured response from the
Ramadhan Foundation.
I
am grateful for all their support and kind words”
