Published: Saturday 7th Janaury 2012 20:00

The Ramadhan Foundation is pleased to announce that its Chairman Shaykh Muhammad Umar will be attending and speaking at the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM 2012) Summit being held from 16th - 19th January 2012 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.  The GMM 2012 is organised by the Prime Minister of Malaysia H.E. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and this initative was included in the final communique of the Commonwealth Summit 2011 in Perth.

The Global Movement of Moderates is an intitative that seeks to promote a loose union of independent individuals committed to pursuing an enduring and peaceful co-existence.  At a time of great division amongst communities across the world on grounds of race, faith or gender we require a coming together of people to say no to division and hatred and this Summit is the beginning.

Shaykh Muhammad Umar will be addressing the Summit on the topic of “Democracy and Moderation” the session will also include the former Vice President of Indonesia HE. Dr. H. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, former Irish President Mary Robinson and Senior UN Representative Dr Helena Barroco.  His presentation will call for Muslims to return to the path of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which was moderation and commit to buiding a world free of bigotry and hatred.  Shaykh Muhammad Umar will also be meeting various Malyasian Ministers throughout his visit and also engage with the international media at the sidelines of the Summit.

Shaykh Muhammad Umar comments:

“It is a great honour to be asked by the Malaysian Prime Minister to attend this important Summit and address it on the topic of democracy and moderation.  I commend the Prime Minister for his intiative to promote moderation and stamp out hatred and division.  The Ramadhan Foundation since its formation in 2005 has been committed to building unity amongst the Muslim family and also ensuring that there is peaceful co-existence between our diverse communties regardless of faith, gender, race or nationality.  We have led the way in taking on extremism, hatred, division and our record in this area will allow me to provide a real insight at the Summit.

Malaysia is a shining example of moderation and peaceful co-existence and I know this Summit is the first step in buidling an alliance for moderation across the world.  Let us all commit to this worthy cause which will define the future of coming generations.”
