MPS REPORT ON ENGAGEMENT WITH HAMAS

The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes the report from the Foreign and Commonwealth
Select Committee on “Global Security” The House of Commons
report recognises that the UK’s Government policy to refuse to engage
with Hamas is a clear rebuke to those that voted for the Hamas party in
the Landslide victory over a year ago.
The
Ramadhan Foundation attacked the Blair Government in August 2006 when
they refused to condemn the Israeli aggression against Lebanon; this
double standard has fuelled hatred against UK’s standings in the
international community.
We
hear from Western Governments that they are spreading democracy across
the Middle East yet when the most democratic nation in the region voted
in landslide for Hamas they refused to accept this result.
We
welcome the Committee’s recommendation that the British Government
engages with Hamas on an equal footing as the legitimately elected
Government of the Palestinian people. They already have made
contact with Hamas during the Alan Johnston hostage crisis; it was due
to Hamas’s work that Alan was release safely.
Mr
Shazad Anwar, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:
“The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes the Foreign and Commonwealth Select
Committee report on the Middle East. We urge the British
Government to engage with the democratically elected Government under
Hamas, without this dialogue the double standards of British foreign
policy will continue to fuel hatred towards the UK.
Last
year the Ramadhan Foundation was at the forefront of attacking the
Government’s refusal to condemn the Israeli aggression against Lebanon,
we are pleased the MPs have also recognised and condemned this
inaction.
The
UK government cannot preach democracy and then refuse to recognise the
choice of the Palestinian people; it is time for the world to stop
ignoring the suffering of these people.”
