NEW ANTI TERROR LAWS WILL ALIENATE MINORITY COMMUNITIES AND
CREATE A POLICE STATE
Published: 27/05/2007 12.30
The
Ramadhan Foundation today expresses its concern over reports that
the Government will try to introduce draconian legislation
authorising the Police to stop anyone without suspicion. The
proposals are an affront to freedom and Civil Liberties and we urge
the Government not to rush such important legislation through
without careful consideration by Parliament.
We
certainly support the Police in their work in protecting the
country from terrorism and extremism, but giving these
unprecedented powers will create further fear in minority
communities that the Police can and will abuse these powers.
Without taking the minority communities with you the work to stop
terrorism will not be as effective.
There
will be a perception that these powers will lead to our country
becoming a Police state, we would urge the Government to listen to
the minority communities as they will be the most at risk from
racial profiling.
Mr.
Shazad Anwar, Chief Executive comments:
“These
proposals will seriously impact on innocent people and will create
a police state; we urge the Home Secretary to allow sufficient time
for Parliamentary scrutiny and time to engage the minority
communities that will be adversely affected.
In
the dying days of the Blair Premiership we urge all those that wish
to protect freedoms and civil liberties over hundreds of years to
stand up and be counted, taking individual freedoms away from the
population is not the solution to the problem.
We
hope the Government listens to the people”
