More Muslim MPS needed – Ramadhan
Foundation attacks the Liberal
Democrats & Mohammed Shafiq to attend the Liberal Democrat
Conference 13/09/2005

The Ramadhan Foundation will lobby the Liberal Democrats at
their party Conference in Blackpool next week. We will use the
occasion to lobby the party leaders on the threat to our
freedoms and civil liberties this Government’s twelve point plan
will cause. We are urging the Politicians to sit up and listen
to the real fear in the Muslim community that these proposals
are seen as an attack on Islam and the Muslim community’s way of
life, importantly we will also urge the leaders to select Muslim
candidates in winnable seats, this is the only way we can defeat
terrorism and extremism.
The attacks in London were an attack on the whole country, we
will not apologise for the attacks as Muslims, they have no
association with our community and we condemn the attacks not as
Muslims but as human beings. Tony Blair and his Government must
not be allowed to rush through draconian legislation through
Parliament which is ill thought and in clear breach of the
European Convention of Human Rights. For a Labour Government to
threaten the judiciary in this country is abhorrent and the
United Kingdom citizens should stand up to protect our rights.
Mohammed Shafiq, the Ramadhan Foundation Spokesman said:
“The London attacks awoke the Muslim community to the challenges
of defeating those that carry out mass murder and also it has
highlighted to Muslims in the UK to unite to fight and counter
this attack on Islam, it is time for politicians to speak out
against the erosion of our Civil Liberties, I hope my meetings
with Lib Dem leaders will allow them to wake up to the reality
of increased Islamphobia, oppression towards Muslims and why
MPs need to vote against these measures. I hope that our
messages are sincerely taken up by the party and it begins to
become more representative.
It is a sad indictment that thousands of Muslims voted for the
Liberal Democrats at the recent General Election but the party
failed to make the party more representative by selecting Muslim
candidates in winnable seats. Lets see all political parties
wake up to this shameful failure in making our political system
representative of our society”
