TEACHERS CALL FOR FAITH SCHOOL BAN – NASUWT PROMOTES INTOLERANCE AND DISCRIMINATION

Published: 16/04/2007 15:00

On Friday the NASUWT Conference in Belfast has debated a motion to support the banning of faith school and with this debate coming from a Trade Union that is working to eradicate discrimination is deeply worrying.

NASUWT's Brian Williams says “Religions are there to close people's minds. Schools exist to educate. Religions exist to indoctrinate”, we can gather from this motion that the NASUWT want to promote intolerance towards people of faith.

It may have escaped the attention of the NASUWT that faith schools are some of the highest performers in the country; their exam results and OFSTED inspections report high achievement and a commitment to promoting diversity and multi culturalism.

The true reasons for this motion is to attack faith schools, the secularists are not interested in the high achievement or success they wish to attack the schools just because they promote faith.  We often hear these Unions talk about freedom of choice and opportunity – where are these values when it comes to faith.

The Ramadhan Foundation is opposed to attempts to ban faith schools, they must be judged on their records and high achievement.  We are certainly pleased that the UK Government recognises their success and we hope that rather than banning faiths schools more are brought into the state-funding arena.

Mr. Shazad Anwar, Chief Executive comments:

“I am horrified that a Trade Union is advocating discrimination and prejudice towards people of faith, this motion does not support the aspirations of the trade union movement to create an inclusive society that promotes freedom and equality.

The secularists are waging a battle to denigrate the faiths schools and we in the Ramadhan Foundation will stand with all faiths to ensure we can counter these attempts.

The NASUWT should hang its head in shame at this motion and I hope they actively oppose this sort of discrimination, this goes against basic universal human rights”
