PRESIDENT OBAMA SPEECH TO MUSLIM WORLD

Published: 02/06/2009 16:30

Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:

“As President Obama begins his visit to the Middle East and Europe the pressure will still be on the US Government to stop the rhetoric and start delivering on their election promises.

I welcome President Obama’s attempts to reach out to Muslims across the world; we are heartened that he recognises the positive contribution Muslims make to the world.

Now with a right wing Zionist Government in Israel it is clear that the continued occupation and oppression of the Palestinians will go on, the settlements are increasing contrary to international law and the racist policy of Netanyahu and Lieberman is to wipe Palestinians out of their land.

President Obama must now recognise Israel’s secret mission to take all Palestinian land – there can be no peace until Israel ends the occupation.

I hope President Obama now backs his speeches and rhetoric with action; he should release images of torture committed by US forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, commit to the International Criminal Court and also engage in the campaign to eradicate racism.

Muslims hope that a new chapter in the international community has opened up where the US respects sovereign Nations and their desire to rule their own countries.

We watch with anticipation of real change.”
