ORGAN TASKFORCE REPORT IS GOOD NEWS AND COMMON SENSE FOR FREEDOM

Published: 15/11/2008 19:00

The Ramadhan Foundation widely welcomes the Government’s Organ Taskforce report into presumed consent on organ donation, if as it is being reported they have proposed no change in consent then common sense has prevailed.  The Foundation has provided detailed support to the Taskforce and we pay tribute to them for their open minds when researching and consulting.

Whatever our views on organ donation, going ahead and assuming consent is dangerous and a serious breach of freedom and choice in this country.  We are clear there needs to be more education and campaigns in all communities and the Foundation is ready to support the government.

The Prime Minster set up this initiative to guide him and he must listen to the experts that make up the taskforce and any attempt to persist to introduce this illiberal measure will be resisted by faith communities.

Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:

“Having played a key role in providing evidence to the Taskforce I am pleased they have taken our views into consideration and have agreed with us that going ahead with presumed consent is not feasible and acceptable in a free country.

The Ramadhan Foundation is clear that the Government needs to invest into educational events and sessions within all communities and ensure we increase those donating their organs to save lives.

I hope the Government accept this report and not persist in pushing this unnecessary measure that will do away with choice.”
