The
Ramadhan
Foundation responds to the abhorrent racism and bigotry shown
today by the Conservative MP Patrick Mercer, Shadow Homeland
Security Spokesman. His comments are offensive to millions of
decent ethnic minorities around the nation.
His comments
reaffirmed the racism and xenophobia that still exists in
today’s Conservative Party, under all that spin there still
remains a large minority who often make racist comments without
being kicked out of the party.
The
Foundation is disappointed that David Cameron’s office initially
refused to condemn the comments and then asked Patrick Mercer to
resign, he should have the Conservative whip removed from him –
that would have sent a powerful message that the Conservatives
had really changed
Mr. Shazad
Anwar, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:
“We condemn Patrick Mercer racist and inflammatory comments and
are disappointed that David Cameron did not sack him, Patrick
Mercer is a long line of Conservative MPs who have made racist
comments. This is a familiar pattern and the Conservative
leader needs to sack Patrick Mercer from the Conservative
Parliamentary Party.
By not sacking him David Cameron has shown that he doe not take
racism as serious as he makes out. There can be no cover for
bigots and racists in any political party and his inaction
speaks volumes today.
There still is time for David Cameron to act, but we are not
hopeful”.
