ASSEMBLIES’
ROW IN SHEFFIELD
Published: 10/02/2009 14.00
Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief
Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:
“I strongly believe that
where there are pupils from different religions then their needs are
met in school assemblies and that schools use the opportunity to
encourage dialogue and understanding of different faiths.
However I do not support
separate assemblies for each religious community, there is a perception
that these separate facilities establish mistrust and disunity when we
should be promoting cohesion and multi faith.
We must be very careful
that we use this opportunity to learn more about different faiths and
understand them, this is central to what makes the UK a great place to
live in.
Having separate assemblies just leads to division when we should be
promoting human unity.”
