SIKH
GIRL WINS BANGLE LAW BATTLE
– GREAT VICTORY FOR
FREEDOM
Published: 29/07/2008 17:00
The
Ramadhan Foundation
welcomes the judgement in the court case involving the Sikh Schoolgirl
and the wearing of a bangle which carries
religious significance
according to the Sikh faith. We congratulate
Sarika Singh
and the Sikh community on
this important victory. In a free
society citizens of all
faiths should be
able to dress according to their teaching.
Mr.
Mohammed Shafiq, Chief
Executive of the Foundation comments:
“I welcome the Court
ruling in the Sarika Singh
case; it sends a powerful
signal that people of faith should be able to dress according to their
religious teaching in a free society. We
congratulate the Sikh
community on this important victory and urge other people of faith to
continue to
challenge decisions that discriminate against them
according to their faith.
I do however question
consistency from the Courts, they reject the right of Muslim girls to
wear the Islamic dress yet on other cases like today they support the
right of the individual
– this
inconsistency needs to be
addressed with some urgency.
These conflicting decisions cause resentment and fear between
communities, I believe that all
faiths should be treated equally and if people wish to dress according
to their religious
beliefs they should be free to do this.”
