JACQUI SMITH PLANS FOR TACKLING TERRORISM AND EXTREMISM

Published: 16/04/2008 08:00

The Ramadhan Foundation responds with mixed feelings at today’s speech by British Home Secretary speech to ACPO on more police officers to tackle extremism and terrorism.  We are perplexed why this speech is being made now when the nation is debating the unnecessary attempts to push through 42 day detention despite such strong opposition from all communities and politicians – this is clearly an attempt to divert attention away from the real issues.

All communities welcome the additional Police Officers but the Government must be under no illusion that these plans do not deal with the underling reasons why we have terrorism and extremism.

The Ramadhan Foundation recognises that the threat from terrorism is real and we must all work together as a nation to eradicate and stop this evil.

Mr. Muhammad Umar, Chairman of the Foundation comments:

“Jacqui Smith’s speech to ACPO is another example of this Government’s London eccentric approach to this issue, they need to get out and meet grassroots organisations that work on a daily basis tackling this issue.

We are concerned that there are attempts to divert attention away from the Government pigheaded attitude to introduce 42 day detention despite such overwhelming oppositions from all sections of society, you can be sure we will speak out against this unnecessary proposal.

We invite the Home Secretary to Greater Manchester to meet with young people and community groups to see how we can tackle this problem, only united can this be defeated.  Communities must come together.

Having a wishy washy approach will not work, whether we like it or not we have to deal with the root causes of why there is extremism and terrorism – foreign policy.  Only by having an honest and open debate without prejudices will we be able to come together

We are ready for that debate, is the Government, I hope so.”

END
