CARTOON CRISIS IN SWEDEN IS CONDEMNED AS REPULSIVE AND AN AFFRONT TO DECENCY

Published: 31/08/2007 22.30

The Ramadhan Foundation today attacks Swedish Newspaper Nerikes Allehanda for their depiction of Prophet Muhammad (SAAWS) as a dog and the SEMUS (Secular Muslims of Sweden) for calling for these to be published; it is another example of the demonisation of Islam and Muslims under the cloak of free speech.

We attack these people for even suggesting that they need to look at these pictures before reaching a decision, all faith’s symbols and people should be respected and not attacked and depicted in this way.  This follows European Newspapers that published similar pictures last year.

The Ramadhan Foundation is deeply hurt that these images were drawn and then published in such a way, there can be no justification for this evil act, those involved should apologise immediately and without reservation.  We urge all Muslims to remain calm and demonstrate in a peaceful way.

Mr Mohammed Shafiq, Press Spokesman of the Foundation comments:

“The Ramadhan Foundation attacks Swedish Newspaper Nerikes Allehanda for their depiction of Prophet Muhammad (SAAWS) as a dog and the SEMUS (Secular Muslims of Sweden) for calling for these to be published to facilitate a debate, there can be no justification for this evil act and I urge both SEMUS and Nerikes Allehanda to apologise unreservedly.

We urge all faith communities to come together to campaign for all religious symbols and people to be respected and not demonised and depicted in such a repulsive way.

The Ramadhan Foundation calls on Muslims to demonstrate against this evil act peacefully and not be provoked as these evil people wish Muslims to do.

It is time for Western Governments to recognise that legislation is needed to outlaw these activities and depictions.”
