UNIVERSITY UNION SPEAKS
COMMON SENSE ON SPYING ON STUDENTS

The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes today’s unanimous vote by the University
and College Union annual conference in Brighton in relation to the
Government’s proposals to spy on students to tackle alleged extremism.
During the constant demonisation of Muslims in UK, we pay tribute to
the Union and its members for standing up for Civil Liberties and
rejecting the attempts of the Government to create division in
University and College campuses across the country. Tackling
extremism should never be an excuse to judge all Muslims according to
the actions of small minorities, Lecturers should be able to protect
student trust and this proposal would go some way in creating very
difficult situation for both Universities and the students.
The
Ramadhan Foundation believes that Universities must remain safe spaces
for lecturers and students to discuss and debate all sorts of ideas
without the fear of being spied on.
Mr. Shazad Anwar, Chief Executive of the Foundation
comments:
“The
Ramadhan Foundation welcomes the University and Colleges Union’s
unanimous vote in favour of protecting freedom and free speech in
Universities and Colleges. The fact the vote was unanimous is
indication of the strength of feeling against the Government’s
proposals.
I
pay tribute to the Union and stand with them on this issue and also
thank the National Union of Students (NUS), Federation of Student
Islamic Societies (FOSIS) for their work on this important issue.
We
urge the Government to listen to those at the heart of Universities and
colleges across the country”
END
