The
Ramadhan Foundation today is dismayed by today’s opinion poll in
the Telegraph newspaper. The poll is encouraging further
isolation between the diverse communities of the United
Kingdom. Let us not judge the views of the 60 million citizens
on the basis of a poll of 1000 people.
We
commend the role of the security forces to ensure that the
alleged airline plot was averted; it is during these difficult
times that we need more dialogue and understanding between
communities of faith and no faith.
The
government and the media has fuelled these misconceptions, they
have allowed extremists on both sides to hijack the agenda and
also the media give ample time to these figures and little
coverage to the majority of Muslims who believe in peaceful co
existence between citizens in this country.
Mr.
Muhammad Umar, the Foundation’s Chairman comments:
“We
have already recognised that we face challenging times in this
country, we have to reach out to divided communities, build
bridges and force through organisational change and reform to
ensure we meet the needs of the 21st century.
We
should not allow the right wing media to whip up more hatred
towards Muslims, I will not judge all UK citizens as racists and
bigots as a result of this poll and we expect the citizens of
the UK not to judge all Muslims as terrorists and extremists.
The
Foundation believes we should celebrate the positive
contribution that Muslims are making in all walks of life in the
United Kingdom, we are an integral part of UK society and the
sooner the bigots realise this, the better”
